Sony Ericsson have announced the new Sony Ericsson Z610 mobile phone. The Z610 is a 3G clamshell phone with respectable mid-range features (2 megapixel camera, video recording and streaming, push email, MP3 player - blimey, that all that can be classed as 'mid-range'!). What sets the Z610 apart from its rivals, though, is its front cover, which is completely opaque when not in use, but which features an 'invisible' OLED display that appears when a call comes in, or when the user presses any buttons.

Sony Ericsson call this a 'magic mirror' display, which apparently "achieves the feel of a calm ocean surface." I'm sure we're all reminded of the ocean whenever we see an OLED display...er...!

While still functioning as a phone, the G910 is designed more like a palmtop computer, and retains the Portege moniker used for Toshiba’s laptops. It is a clamshell PDA-phone that runs on Windows Mobile 6 Professional and is designed for business users who need to stay connected and run office applications such as Word and Excel.
The device’s overall size is a little on the bulkier side of most PDA phones. The size seemed somewhat unjustified if looking only at the G910’s exterior. The outside of the device consists simply of a smooth two-toned surface with a tiny text display on the front Call/Hangup buttons and D-pad. Opening up the G910, however, reveals much more. Firstly, the touchscreen is an amazing 3-inch 800×480 display. This screen renders the finest details with no sign of pixelation no matter how hard you try to stare at it. The size and resolution also allows a greater than average amount of information to be portrayed, especially useful for documents and web browsing.
The other half of the G910 consists of the QWERTY keyboard. The keys are fairly large and are designed based on a standard laptop’s keyboard. This includes directional keys in the lower right corner, a large spacebar and even a Windows key. There are also more shortcut keys along each side of the touchscreen for common applications. For multimedia, the G910 supports all the common formats thanks to Windows Media. There is an autofocusing 2-megapixel camera on the back of the G910, along with a VGA camera on the inner screen for 3G video calls.
Another feature clearly designed to classify the G910 within Toshiba’s Portege range is the fingerprint scanner. Placed along the edge of the keyboard, this feature allows fingerprint security to be incorporated into the device. If you want, you can also configure the scanner to work as a miniature touchpad for navigation.
To stay connected, the G910 features 3G with HSDPA, WiFi and Bluetooth, on top of being a quad-band GSM phone. The bulk of the G910 may be off-putting to some, but the features within explain why the size is necessary. We also applaud Toshiba’s attempt to differentiate the G910 from other Windows Mobile devices thanks to its unique.

Ok, lets get a few facts straight. The i600 is not the same as the Blackjack. The i600 has a VGA cam at the front as well being WiFi. The Blackjack whose model is the Samsung i607 does not have these features.
These two devices profess to be smartphones and the operative word is ‘Smart’. The fact of the matter is there is very little smartness to almost anything that Microsoft Windoes has to offer. Applications that run on these devices are generally clanky and very unimaginative, both in function and espacially in their UI(user interface). Third party apps are no better. Although these devices offer more viable interaction than the general handsets in the market they are still not smart. The one great feature in the ’smartphone’ that links it to the idea of being smart is that some windows based handsets have WiFi capability which allow the user to connect to the web via hotspots. The most obvious feature is the keypad that doesn’t really cross the smart borders, but kind of strolls around it. Even the homescreen is backward and very uninteresting. There is some good news and some bad news. The European model of the i600 has a homescreen called ‘The card wheel’ or ‘Carousel’

LG KT610

In particular the KG800 was LG's successful model; with its touchscreen, instead of physical buttons, as a novelty for operating the menu. What's obvious about LG phones is the importance of the design. LG cell phones are known to look neat, and LG recently joined forces with Prada, resulting in the LG Prada, to make people that are interested in style, go for LG too.
A feature on the LG KF600 that stands out and that is pointed out in LG's communication about this cell phone is the Dual-screen. As mentioned before, a small touchscreen is found below the common TFT screen, which displays selection possibilities for the menu you're in, and these vary per menu item. You will standard find a number of quick buttons here; the menu button is one of them. If you want to take a picture these buttons will change and you can choose from settings, capture, back and sun, to adjust the contrast. The second screen makes the device truly more user-friendly, although the touchscreen sometimes takes its time to respond. Especially when you scroll through the menu quickly or if you select a function from the bottom row, you will notice that the screen can't keep up with your speed. Using the normal number keys, however, will solve the problem. Furthermore the screen is shiny which makes it a tad harder to read the screen while outdoors in broad daylight.
